The Community Safety Initiatives unit provides leadership and oversight of Alberta Justice's community justice programs and transformative initiatives. These programs and initiatives all leverage the community to provide alternative approaches to the traditional justice system to make justice more accessible and offer better outcomes for participants. Additionally, this unit works within the justice system to ensure that stakeholders are aware of the underlying causes of crime, family justice issues, and access to justice in order to enhance their services to reflect the needs of Albertans.
Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager of Community Justice Programs, the Community and Program Liaison is a justice system generalist, versed in all areas of law (Civil, Criminal, and Family), and supports community justice projects that span the entire justice system. This position develops and administers different community justice programs, and acts as a liaison between these programs, the justice system, and the community. Working with other Community and Program Liaisons and Administrative supports, this position supports the development of new programs and provides operational supports to ensure that these new community programs operate effectively.
The incumbent will be involved in the department’s administration of community justice programs, including specialized courts, restorative justice, youth justice committees, and will act a liaison between government and these community programs. This position may be required to travel throughout the province to facilitate communities conversations around the development of restorative justice and community justice strategies. Additionally, the incumbent will support these initiatives by drafting summary reports on engagement conversations, completing final reports, and writing briefing material to inform the department and government partners.
This position supports other transformative justice initiatives that include mental health, addictions, gender-based violence, youth justice, family justice, anti-racism, poverty, access to justice, and diversity and inclusion. These Community Justice Programs and transformative justice initiatives involve representation from across Justice, Public Safety and Emergency Services, Mental Health and Addiction, Health, Assisted Living and Social Services, Children and Family Services, Education, Arts, Culture and the Status of Women, Alberta Health Services, Legal Aid Alberta, the Judiciary, local police, and non-profit organizations.
This position acts as a liaison with individuals from across these GOA departments and external stakeholder groups, as it pertains to the creation, operation, and oversight of community justice programs and initiatives. They will be responsible and will directly support the department’s Business Plan, goals in promoting safe community in Alberta and working in partnership with the other partners to support existing and develop new specialized courts and restorative justice initiatives.

Responsibilities for these roles include:
- Administration of Existing Community Justice Programs; including: Specialized Courts, Restorative Justice (RJ), Youth Justice Committees (YYC), Community Justice Centres, Community Justice Strategy.
- Support Development of New Community Justice Programs and Coordinate their Services.
- Implement Policy and Strategy for Community Justice Programs.
- Support Transformative Justice Initiatives within the Justice System.
- Collaboration with Internal and External Stakeholders.
- Contribute to Unit and Justice Supports Branch.
- Preparation of briefing material and responds to Action Requests to inform senior leadership.
- Monitor data and statistics from community justice programs to identify trends in provincial practices.
- Provide support in the development and administration for the provincial RJ program.
- Represent the Branch on various committees and/or attend local community agency and stakeholder meetings.
- Communication with stakeholders to ensure adherence of the principles and policies on the RJ program.
- Knowledge and application of statistical and research methodologies.
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture, beliefs, and practices.
- Extensive knowledge of grant/contract management, monitoring, assessment and evaluation.
- Stake holder development in Community Justice Programs.
- Knowledge of immigration and settlement issues of New Canadians.
- Working knowledge of the criminal justice system and related legislation.
- Working knowledge of provincial and federal legislation related to policing.
- Extensive knowledge in theories/practices related to specialized courts and restorative justice.
- Knowledge of government contract and grant management best practices
- Working knowledge of FOIP.
- Extensive knowledge of “best practices” in specialized courts and restorative justice.
- Working knowledge of specialized courts and restorative justice. organizations/programs and serves available to Albertans.
- Working understanding of governments and departmental mandate, goals, and priorities.
- Broad understanding of issues facing the departments/division/branch/unit.
- Working knowledge of GOA financial procedures.
- Working knowledge of Public Safety Canada’s mandate and goals.
- Branch and department reporting requirements.
- Working knowledge of alternate community funding sources/Provincial Service Agreements supporting community initiatives

Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in social sciences or related areas and four (4) years of relevant experience is required.
Equivalencies may be considered:
Master and a minimum one (1) year related experience, Diploma and a minimum of six (6) years related experience, Certificate and a minimum of seven (7) years related experience, no education and a minimum of eight (8) years related experience.
