Role Responsibilities

Join our team as a senior leader in compliance, where you’ll play a key role in guiding a dynamic team of inspectors and investigators while driving impactful provincial initiatives!

Reporting to the Compliance Manager, this position acts as an Environmental Protection Officer while providing direct leadership to a district compliance team of inspectors and investigators, coordinating annual operational plans, leading provincial compliance initiatives, and mentoring peers, ministry staff, and external stakeholders to ensure knowledge transfer.

This position provides first-line leadership to compliance staff, with a focus on guiding field teams and supporting the Compliance Manager. In addition to leadership duties, the role involves technical responsibilities, including collaboration with industry stakeholders, municipalities, government agencies, and the public. A strong understanding of the department’s core objectives—Education, Prevention, and Enforcement—is essential. The position also involves managing cumulative effects in environmental compliance and ensuring successful program delivery. This role may require appointment as a Peace Officer, with additional responsibilities aligned with management and authority functions. You may also be required to act as an Emergency Regional Responder serving on an on-call rotational basis expected to receive, prioritize, and respond to environmental emergencies.

Some responsibilities of this role include:

  • Advising, educating and leading staff within the Compliance working unit with a focus on coaching and development.
  • Leading various compliance program enhancement initiatives and projects on behalf of the District compliance team.
  • Acting as the primary liaison, addressing stakeholder concerns, and resolving issues before escalation to the Compliance Manager.
  • Assisting the Compliance Manager in updating the operational plan, coordinating inspection plans, and ensuring consistent use of tracking tables. 
  • Driving program improvement through audits and trend analysis.
  • Participating in recruitment for the area.
  • Developing briefing notes, Action Requests, and Information Requests to address stakeholder concerns related to compliance and enforcement activities.
  • Assisting in development of regional and provincial Compliance Annual Reports.
  • Conducting investigations, inspections, audits, sweeps and coordinating compliance activities within the District.
  • Acting Compliance Manager in the manager’s absence.
  • Assisting the Compliance Manager with setting priorities for day-to-day duties of EPO team using established triage and prioritization processes. Addresses appropriate cover-off concerns.
  • Comprehensively reviewing inspection files and investigation packages for relevance and completeness.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • A two-year technical diploma in a related field such as Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, Industrial Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Agriculture, or Forestry  . 
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Seven years related work experience in a supervisory, inspection, or investigations role, or equivalent as described below.


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Previous experience working with the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. 
  • Previous work experience as an Environmental Protection Officer, Inspector, or Investigator.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build a strong, cohesive team and foster a functional work unit.
  • A strong understanding of the duties required of an Environmental Protection Officer.
  • Strong skills in communication, facilitation, conflict resolution, time management, and policy development.
  • In-depth knowledge of compliance and enforcement activities, with a strong understanding of natural and applied sciences to assess environmental data, identify emerging issues and trends, and evaluate risks to the environment, human health, and the department.
  • Knowledge of ministry legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to compliance.
  • Thrives within a complex, diverse, and changing work environment.
  • Possesses analytical skills, independent decision-making skills, conflict resolution skills required to manage the expectations of a wide variety of stakeholders and government organizations.

Notes

This position can be based in Bonnyville, Lac La Biche, or Fort McMurray.

Eligible employees who work and reside in the Fort McMurray location will receive the following:

  • Attraction Bonus: The attraction bonus is a one-time payment equivalent to 25% of the employee's base pay at the start of employment, subject to lawful deductions. This bonus is disbursed quarterly over the first year of employment.
  • Fort McMurray Allowance: Eligible employees will receive an additional $478.17 per bi-weekly pay period, in addition to their regular earnings, as part of the Fort McMurray Allowance.
