Role

Under the leadership of the Food Safety Branch, the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS) is responsible for licensing and regulating provincial red meat and poultry abattoirs, mobile butcher facilities, mobile butchers and on-farm Slaughter operations. Join the Airdrie team as a Meat Inspector and help play a role in maintaining Alberta's reputation for excellence in food safety! As a Meat Inspector, you will be responsible for providing inspection services at provincial abattoirs while ensuring abattoirs remain compliant with legislation. Duties while performing kill floor inspection services will include: pre-operation inspection, ante and post-mortem examination of animals, completion of time reporting, and completing relevant inspection documentation. 

 

This work requires an understanding of animal diseases and pathology, humane handling and stunning requirements, sanitation practices, and food safety control programs. This position is a regulatory role and involves the onsite enforcement of provincial statutes administered by the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section. You must be familiar with and have the ability to interpret the Meat Inspection Act, Meat Inspection Regulation, and Meat Facility Standards.

Qualifications

Two-year technical diploma in a related field, such as Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, or Food Safety/Food Science, plus a minimum of 2 years directly related work experience in kill floor ante-mortem and post-mortem meat inspection. Knowledge of animal diseases/pathology is required. Experience using computer technology is required.

Applicants with experience as a meat inspector within the Canadian federal or provincial meat inspection system are preferred.

Equivalencies may be considered for vacancies at a lower classification level.

Salary

$30.91 to $40.48 per hour

Notes

We are currently looking for applicants who are interested in wage opportunities. This role is a temporary, wages position with a projected duration of six (6 months). The hours will be on an on-call, as-needed basis with no guaranteed hours. Hours will vary from week to week. We are currently looking to fill a wage position in Airdrie.

 

Please be aware that wage/casual/on-call positions have no guaranteed hours of work.

 

A valid Alberta driver’s license and a commercial driver’s abstract are required. Successful candidates may need to drive long distances before and after shifts. 

 

The ability to travel within Alberta is required.
