Role Responsibilities

Are you a strategic thinker who thrives at the intersection of policy, improvement, and execution? The Branch Strategic Initiatives Coordinator plays a key role in advancing branch-and-divisional system-wide priorities. You will support the Executive Director in aligning branch efforts with ministry-wide goals, shaping initiatives that improve service delivery, and fostering collaboration across ministry partners.

This is a role for someone who can see both the forest and the trees — connecting emerging trends, analyzing complex issues, and translating strategic direction into actionable plans that drive results.

Who we are: The Justice Supports Branch mission is to lead with innovation and collaboration, aligning people, programs, and policy to deliver adaptable justice services. The branch provides strategic oversight, policy and program coordination, and operational support to ensure initiatives are future-ready, data-driven, and responsive to the needs of many people. Our work spans legal aid governance, community justice initiatives (including the administration of the ministry’s grants and collaborating with community stakeholders to advance Restorative Justice initiatives). We are the Indigenous policy and services unit for the ministry and administer the Gladue report writing and Indigenous courtworker programs. Our team also includes the Alberta Law Libraries and Official Documents and Appointments which assist Albertans with access to justice and manage the Commissioner for Oaths and Notary Public programs.

Who you are: This role is situated within the Program Services stream and offers an excellent opportunity to build foundational skills and gain experience in strategic initiatives within the ministry of Justice. You are someone who wants to build your career in an upward trajectory over the next few years. The role will require you to learn and apply briefing skills, provide support to the Assistant Deputy Minister’s Office, and utilize basic project management skills while supporting multiple areas with competing and unique demands. The successful candidate thinks long term and considers the broader system context when addressing challenges, anticipating change, and adapting with optimism and composure. You are driven to exceed goals, take ownership of outcomes, and consistently seek opportunities to improve processes and achieve better results. The successful candidate demonstrates a proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment, showing effective communication, analytical, and organizational skills to synthesize information, craft recommendations, and present them with clarity and confidence. They work collaboratively across teams and functions, exercising sound judgment and initiative to advance shared goals and deliver meaningful results.

Role Cont'd.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and coordinate strategic initiatives that align branch and ministry priorities, ensuring projects are well-defined, outcomes-focused, and delivered effectively.
  • Conduct research, analysis, and environmental scanning to inform branch decision-making and long-term planning.
  • Develop briefing materials, frameworks, and reports that translate complex information into clear insights and actionable recommendations.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to advance innovation, strengthen service delivery, and support system-wide integration.
  • Monitor project performance and identify opportunities for continuous improvement in processes, governance, and results.
  • Support branch leadership in planning, reporting, and communication activities that enhance alignment across the division and ministry.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and excellence through proactive engagement and solution-focused problem-solving.

What you will bring to the role:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to interpret data, identify trends, and provide sound recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills — able to convey complex ideas with clarity, precision, and confidence.
  • A mindset oriented toward continuous improvement, innovation, and achieving measurable outcomes.
  • Sound judgment, professionalism, and an initiative-taking approach to navigating challenges and driving positive change.
