Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about wildlife conservation and sustainable fisheries? Do you thrive in a dynamic, hands-on environment where your contributions directly impact the province’s natural resources? If so, we have several exciting opportunities for you to join our team as a Fisheries Technician!

As part of a specialized team, the Fisheries Technician supports the annual provincial fish-stocking and walleye programs throughout Alberta. Operating with some degree of independence, this role is responsible for performing various technical duties essential for the effective and efficient delivery of fish culture programs and initiatives. Work is conducted in accordance with established practices, Ministry policies, procedures, and legislation. This position provides technical assistance in egg and fish production, enabling the Ministry to achieve its business plan goals and objectives. Additionally, the Fisheries Technician contributes to fish culture operations at the hatchery and assists in delivering public services that promote awareness of fish culture programs and initiatives.

This role involves travel for fieldwork, which may include remote camp stays of up to 10 days. Fieldwork includes sampling stocked water bodies using intensive and passive netting techniques.

Stocked lakes support approximately 25% of all angling activity in the province, contributing to an economic impact of over $166 million annually. The province's four major fish culture facilities stock approximately 300 water bodies each year, while the provincial walleye stocking program enhances recreational fishing opportunities. The successful rearing and distribution of fish play a critical role in enhancing public angling experiences.

Additional responsibilities include conducting hatchery tours for the public, performing physically demanding tasks, and working on a weekend rotation with other staff. This may also involve late-night and early-morning shifts.
